Medical Detox Meal Plan: Quick Basics

A medical detox is a procedure that involves eliminating intoxicating substances from the body. You can go on a medical detox to remove alcohol, drugs, or prescription medicine such as antibiotics from the body. Depending on the severity of the issues caused by the said drugs, a medical detox can be carried out at home or under the supervision of a doctor.

Whichever option you go for, it is essential to understand the role of nutrition in a medical detox. Eating the right food furnishes your body with adequate nutrients that may be flushed out during the detoxification process. A proper diet rejuvenates, refreshes, and strengthens the body. It also reduces withdrawal symptoms that are associated with certain drugs such as alcohol and illicit substances.

You need to come up with a meal plan for the entire detox period to give your body adequate nutrients. In this light, here are some basics that you should have in mind when preparing your meal plan for the detox.

Get Enough Protein

The body of an individual who has been addicted to or dependent on drugs is usually suffering in a certain way. Foods that are rich in protein help to heal the tissues and cells and restore the organs. Therefore, ensure that you get adequate proteins for your breakfast, lunch, supper, and snacks. Go for healthy proteins and avoid unhealthy ones. Some of the food options that you can consider are eggs, nuts, chicken, fish, low-fat milk and cheese, and turkey among others. Incorporate these into your breakfast, and your body will bounce back after the detox.

Eat Your Whole Grains

Carbohydrates are excellent sources of energy. However, you should avoid refined ones such as white bread. Instead, opt for whole-grain bread, pasta, rice, oatmeal, and much more. Whole-grain foods give you adequate fiber which helps improve digestion and alleviate gut problems. They are also an excellent source of energy during the detoxification period. Include whole-grain foods into your breakfasts, lunches, and dinner every day during and even after the diet.

Pack Up on Healthy Fats

During a detox, you may experience feelings of withdrawal, depression, lack of energy, and other awful symptoms which come with denying your body something that it has been used to. In some cases, you may find yourself craving unhealthy foods such as processed substances, junk, and sugars as well. Beat the symptoms and cravings by packing up on healthy fats. You will find these in nuts, avocado, fish, and healthy oils. You can also take omega-3 supplements as well.

Eat for Your Liver

The liver is the body organ that’s tasked with detoxifying the body and getting rid of toxins. Therefore, it may be overworked during a medical detox. Nurture it back to good health by eating foods that are good for the liver. These include cabbage, broccoli, green leafy vegetables, kale, and Brussels sprouts. Eat a lot of seaweed as well as it binds the remnants of the drugs and prevents them from being absorbed into the body.

Final Thoughts

A medical detox can be hard on your body, and the last thing you need is to grow weak and malnourished after the plan. Come up with a meal plan that incorporates the foods we have mentioned so that your body can get the required nutrients to bounce back into good health. Also, remember to take lots of water. Water helps the body to flush out toxins, hydrates the body, and assists with withdrawal symptoms. Talk to an expert if you are not sure on how to create a personal medical detox meal plan.
