Kishor Kumar’s First wife Ruma Guha Passed away

Kishor Kumar’s first wife Ruma Guha Thakurta passed away on Monday during her sleep at their Ballygunge residence.

Ruma who was 84 years old was suffering from old age ailments. She is survived by two of her sons Amit Kumar who is also a singer and a daughter.

“She passed away in her sleep early this morning. Our family doctor confirmed it. The timing of her death could be between 6 and 6.15 am,” 

said Ayan Guha who is also her son from her second marriage.

Ruma was born on 3rd November 1934 in Kolkata. She started as a dancer and then moved to Bombay and there only she married Kishore Kumar during the 1950s. the two got separated in 1958 and then she went on to marry writer cum director Arup Guha Thakurta with whom she had two sons both of whom are singers.

Ayan also added that his mother returned to Kolkata last month only after staying with their elder brother Amit Kumar for three and a half months. He also added that singer Amit Kumar is coming to Kolkata and he will only take decisions about their mother’s last rites.

Ruma is the niece of film director Satyajit Ray and has acted in over 60 films. She has also worked with other great directors like Mira Nair, Tapan Sinha, Aparna Sen, and likewise.

She also worked as a playback singer in many films. Ruma was also the founder of Calcutta Youth Choir which is a song and dance troupe and is most popularly known for folk and mass songs. Popular songs of the choir includes ‘Aaj joto juddhabaj’, ‘Bharatbarsho surjer ek naam’, ‘O Ganga boichho keno’ and ‘Waqt ki awaz’.

West Bengal Chief Minister also expressed her grief over the iconic lady’s passing away.

“Saddened at the passing away of Ruma Guha Thakurta.

Her contribution to the field of cinema and music will always be remembered. My condolences to her family and her admirers,”
