A multitalented man from Bollywood Girish Karnad breathed his last on 10th June. The man was a noted actor, filmmaker, and playwright. The actor left us at the Bangalore hospital at 6:30 A.M.
The actor is known for his critically acclaimed work in various plays like “Yayati”, “Hayavadana” and “Tughlaq”. One of the key points about his plays is that all of them had a strong social message to be learned.
He was also a fearless social and political activist who was never shy of expressing his opinions. He used his literary skills to express his opinion and stood strongly for the same. He received many death threats during his lifetime but even then he was never shy of expressing his thoughts.
In April, he was one of the 200 writers all across the country who wrote an open hate letter against “The politics of hate”.
In September last year, he was charged for holding a placard that read “Me Too Urban Naxal”. This is actually an event which marked the first anniversary of Journalist Gaur Lankesh’s murder. He had protested against the five accused who were linked with Maoists.
Girish Karnad was also awarded Padma Shri in the year 1974 and Padma Bhushan in the year 1992. Since he is one of the gifted litterateurs, he was also conferred with Jnanpith award in 1998.
He has written various plays and almost all of them were critically acclaimed. Some of them are – Yayati, Tughlaq, and Hayavadana.
He has also been quite active in cinema and he made his screenwriting debut with Kannada movie in “Samskara” in 1970.
